Pantone's Classic Blue

In 2019, we floated through the year with lively Living Coral (16-1546), but now we're building a stable threshold with Pantone's 2020 Color of the Year Classic Blue (19-4052) — a rich, dreamy, dark and beautiful shade of azure. "We are living in a time that requires trust and faith. It is this kind of constancy and confidence that is expressed by Pantone 19-4052 Classic Blue, a solid and dependable blue hue we can always rely on," says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute. This particular shade of blue is reflective, anchoring and self-assured. It's relaxed and restful, and meant to offer us all a sense of needed tranquility.

Pantone's Classic Blue

Creative confidence abound, as Classic Blue can transform almost any space into the perfect protective refuge. Use it on the walls of your living room or bedroom for a bolder look, or incorporate it more subtlety with accessories — couches, chairs or lamps — for a more elegant feel. Want to go monochromatic? Muted blues may be best. And, of course, corals and blush pinks will bring out Classic Blue's more feminine side. The good news is, blue is timeless; pair it with white and you truly can't go wrong.

HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams' Romance

Like Juliet's bloom of first love in Shakespeare's classic tale, Romance (HGSW2067) evokes both timelessness and infinite possibility — and HGTV's editors have already fallen hard. "Romance is a beautiful soft blush tone with a slight apricot influence," says Ashley Banbury, Senior Color Designer at HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams. "Romance was inspired by our desire to bring elegance and luxury into the home while maintaining serene balance. This colorful neutral is a gorgeous backdrop to jewel tones and gold accents, pairing perfectly with all the colors from our Simply Blissful Color Collection."

Romance sets the stage for nine complementary tones in the Simply Blissful Color Collection, a palette that includes both delicate neutrals and seafaring shades like Finian Blue (HGSW2384) to lend interiors the feel of a restorative getaway. Tumbled together like the sand and surf where the shore meets the pull of the tide, these mix-and-match colors celebrate the elegance of equilibrium.

Behr's Back To Nature

In 2019, Behr channeled architectural aspirations with Blueprint (S470-5). This year's selection slips from the concrete jungle to open vistas and the first buds of spring: "Behr's 2020 Color of the Year, Back To Nature (S340-4), was influenced by our desire to reconnect with nature and the world around us," says Erika Woelfel, a Color Expert at Behr Paint. "Green is the color of renewal, and Back To Nature is the perfect shade to refresh your home for the new year. The nature-inspired hue works in any room of the home — use it in your bathroom for a spa-like sanctuary, or try it in your kitchen for a sense of calm in a more chaotic space."

Behr's Back To Nature

Dissolve the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces by using this garden-inspired hue in transitional zones: It's a fresh alternative to neutrals for doors and entryways, and like a gracious host, it both invites the outdoors in and encourages guests to trail from the living room to the patio. Appropriately, its delicate vernal tones unfurl in natural light.

Benjamin Moore's First Light

Benjamin Moore's city-chic Metropolitan (AF-690) its Color of the Year for 2019 drew on urban understatement with a pale gray that oozed cool sophistication. "We took a different approach this year," explains Hannah Yeo, Color Marketing and Development Manager. "The team captured a shift in mindset that has evolved over the last decade — from the material to satisfy the core needs in life such as creativity, beauty, authenticity and optimism." First Light (2102-70) is the 2020 Color of the Year, and its just-born blush captures the delicate instant of the sun's debut at dawn.

Benjamin Moore's First Light

"The Benjamin Moore color team identified 10 colors that capture the design sensibility that will set the tone for the next year and decade," Yeo continues. "From a soft, rosy hue like First Light to deep sapphire blues, these colors are fresh, upbeat and versatile [shades] that are easy to live with and easy to love. Each color can stand on its own or pair with another, complementing any design style." We love how the break-of-day tones in this dining room give way to the airy early-morning sky of Windmill Wings (2067-60) in the sitting area just beyond it. Valspar's Winter Calm

It's difficult to pick a favorite from Valspar's 12 2020 Colors of the Year, but Winter Calm (4001-1B) is unquestionably a sleeper hit: The lavender hibernating in that cozy grey snuggles up beautifully with the toasty organic tones in wood and leather and gives creamy textiles and architectural features a subtle backdrop.

Valspar's Pale Powder

Pale Powder (3001-8A), in turn, hits the eye like a shaft of light on the warm sedimentary stone in a slot canyon — perfect for a bohemian retreat. Geologic (and biologic) tones echo and harmonize throughout the palette and that natural order is quite intentional, explains Sue Kim, Valspar's Color Marketing Manager. "We looked to the calmness and clarity of nature when selecting Valspar's 2020 Colors of the Year — the shades are livable and subtle while still remaining colorful! Our everyday world can be chaotic and overwhelming, so we continue to create an environment in the home where we can find retreat and balance in our lives. Even though we are looking for a life of balance, a space that has elements of sophistication and maturity are important and thought of as an investment in ourselves."

PPG's Chinese Porcelain

For its 2019 Color of the Year, PPG evoked the lushness of a tropical evening with Night Watch (PPG1145-7), a bold, black-infused green. That moody escapism carries into its 2020 Color of the Year, Chinese Porcelain (PPG1160-6), a contemplative blend of cobalt and ink blues. As in the vessels for which it's named, this oceanic hue contrasts beautifully with crisp whites in crown molding and textiles — and hints at the virtues of slowing down and appreciating calmness, quiet and peace. "This new era of hyper-connectivity has left a sense of feeling unmoored, searching and anxious," notes Dee Schlotter, PPG's Senior Color Marketing Manager. "As people are anxious and craving reassurance, I love that Chinese Porcelain encourages consumers to find some peace in this most agreeable color family while also providing that [spirit of hopefulness and trust] that we need."

PPG's Chinese Porcelain

Textural blues in velvet and tufted furniture gain dimensionality with Chinese Porcelain in a living room, and Schlotter loves the way it pairs with spicy tones like saffron and turmeric. Like the figures on a traditional vase, the color also serves as a graceful accent when brushed across a single accent wall.

Sherwin-Williams's Naval

The terracotta tones of Cavern Clay (SW 7701) cultivated a casual, desert-modern aesthetic as Sherwin-Williams's 2019 Color of the Year. The 2020 Color of the Year falls at the other end of the spectrum, as it were: Opulent Naval (SW 6244) eschews macramé and succulents and goes straight for splashy Art Deco confidence. (Hint: Pair it with gleaming metallic accents, and lots of 'em.) Jay Gatsby's partygoers would raise a glass to this modern take on a maritime classic.

Sherwin-Williams's Naval

Sue Wadden, Director of Color Marketing at Sherwin-Williams, explains how some of the natural world's most dramatic elements informed this year's choice: "Navy blue is timeless and versatile, which made Naval, a deep version reminiscent of the night sky and deep sea, the perfect pick for our 2020 Color of the Year. Homeowners are searching for colors that are inspiring and easy to use in a variety of spaces. Naval answers both of those needs — whether to create a restful bedroom retreat or give a kitchen an unexpected look with this goes-with-anything hue on the cabinets."
